Nightmares & Lullabies contains over a dozen short stories by Ronald McGuire. At times moving, mischievous, and reflective, much of the work is centered on the gay experience at varying life stages. In “Early Summer,” a boy’s first crush leads to the joy of reciprocity, while in “An Understanding,” bitterness, anger, and regret, fill the days of a man whose arrogance has cost him everything he didn’t know he needed, while “Lullaby” reveals a glimpse of the life after this one. This genre-spanning collection includes the award-winning literary fiction “Fitting In,” the sci-fi dystopia of “Farewell, Hollywood,” and the bizarre horror and dark humor of “A Time to Dance,” and “The Not-Zombies Apocalypse.” From the surreal to the sublime, the stories in Nightmares & Lullabies are fearless, unapologetic, and rife with moral ambiguity.

After a shocking event on Halloween night, Charlie Barnes is back in the news for all the wrong reasons. On the bright side, he meets handsome cop Luke. Luke of the blue eyes, perfect nose, beautiful butt cheeks, and, unbeknownst to Charlie, ulterior motives.
Even bad publicity can be good for book sales, according to Charlie’s publisher, who promptly moves up the deadline for his next book. A book he hasn’t started due to a crushing case of writer’s block. Or perhaps he’s just lazy, hard to say.
He’s got a month to write his next book, decide if Luke is for real, and figure out what to do about the suitcase full of drugs he abandoned at the airport. The pressure is on and the ride is about to get bumpy.
About the Author
C.R. “Charlie” Barnes studied literature and journalism in college and went to work for a global news organization immediately after graduation. During his time there the team won 5 Peabody awards and a Columbia-Dupont Award (this is true!). “Happy Holidays!” is his first foray into LGBTQ fiction and its follow-up, “Adulting” is expected in late 2024 (if he stops slacking and starts writing).
Coming Soon:
We’ve got some exciting projects on the way! Unfortunately we’ve run into a few hiccups that will delay the launch of Beach Book Classics and may temporarily impact the availability of “Nightmares and Lullabies” in paperback. We made the difficult decision to accept these delays in order to migrate our business to a new distributor. Links to individual titles, with more detail information, can be found on our Books page.
In the meantime, Beach Book Press is excited to announce that both “Beyond Tomorrow’s Sun” and its sequel, “Beyond the Rivers of Time,” are finalists in the 2024 Page Turner Awards competition. We’re proud to be the press bringing these novels to market, and even more proud of Ronald’s additional nomination for the 2024 Page Turner “Prolific Writer” award! And we can assure you, these novels will launch on schedule, with “Beyond Tomorrow’s Sun” leading the way on December 1, 2024.
In 2025, we’ll be launching Beach Book Classics, with our first collection from editor Dan Dugan, creator of Dan Dugan Editions, “That Which is Hidden.” A collection of four stories, originally published in Weird Tales magazine, written by Manly Wade Wellman (also writing as Gans T. Field). Dan has a knack for spotting overlooked or forgotten gems in the horror, sci-fi, and fantasy genres. With skillful editing and a light touch, Dan breathes new life into classic stories that helped establish the popular genres he loves. Think of Dan as the Turner Classic Movies of literature, working to preserve a rich heritage for future generations of readers. |
Now available wherever books are sold, our first young adult science fiction launch, with Ronald McGuire’s debut novel, “Beyond Tomorrow’s Sun.” And the adventure continues with the early 2025 release of “Beyond the Rivers of Time.” Both novels are 2024 Page Turner Award Finalists! |
Also available now, McGuire’s collection of LGBTQ stories, “Nightmares & Lullabies.” A collection that runs the gamut from first love, to the afterlife, with some sci-fi and horror detours along the way. |
And we’ll be open for submissions in late 2024 as we put together “Beach Book 2025,” a collection of flash fiction, short stories, and photographs, crafted and collected for the vacation reader.
And finally, if we can keep him focused and writing, we’re hoping to have Charlie Barnes’ second novel, “Adulting,” available no later than February 2025. (We originally planned to release it in December, but we haven’t seen so much as a sentence yet, so we’re pushing this one back so Charlie doesn’t rush it).
